The Fast Charger is an absolutely new product. It was designed and developed to permit a positive and rapid re-charge of batteries which, in the normal re-charging conditions available on a boat, are never fully re-charged.
First and foremost, this compromises the life of the batteries themselves
from the slow and progressive process of sulphatisation, and secondly
it prevents the batteries from giving all the power they are capable of,
power necessary for the correct functioning of the electrical equipment
on board.
Power for charging the batteries is always supplied by the alternator (with its appropriate regulator) which is a fixture on all internal combustion engines, diesel or petrol.
Few people know, however, that this system of charging the batteries, even if kept up for an infinitely long period, manages to charge a boat's battery only to a level less than 60% of its true capacity.
A battery subjected to this treatment can dispense only a minimum capacity
of electric power in respect of its real capacity. It is, therefore, liable
to run flat with surprising speed. The Fast Charger
definitively solves this particular problem once and for all.
With the Fast Charger, batteries are charged to 100% capacity, and the complete re-charge can be achieved in a surprisingly short time. In fact, the Fast Charger produces high values of current from the re-charging circuit, in the order of 30 amps or more (according to need).
Naturally the Fast Charger is provided with a circuit which interrupts its working when the batteries being treated are fully charged. The maximum current that can be supplied using the Fast Charger depends on the capacity of the alternator used, and on the capacity of the batteries. This "maximum" can be approximately quantified as half the maximum current that can be distributed by the alternator itself.
The Fast Charger is also fitted with a control circuit for the re-charging current, and this prevents the supply of an excess current. When the Fast Charger is not working, or is in a protective automatic non-function state, the original system remains operative. The Fast Charger can also be left permanently on. Its control system provides for it to start functioning automatically every time the motor is started, and to stop every time the motor stops. When the Fast Charger is in an automatic non-function state, it behaves as if it has been turned off. To start it working again, it is necessary to positively turn off and re-start the adaptor. It is strongly recommended that the battery enclosure is well wired during the re-charging operation.
